Alabama Roots: League leaders don’t touch records
During the 2022 NFL regular season, five players from Alabama high schools and colleges led the league in prominent statistical categories.
The NFL leaders with Alabama football roots included:
· Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (Alabama) with six interceptions.
· Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry (Alabama) with 349 rushing attempts.
· Las Vegas running back Josh Jacobs (Alabama) with 1,653 rushing yards, 2,053 yards from scrimmage and 2,053 all-purpose yards.
· New England Patriots cornerback Marcus Jones (Enterprise, Troy) with 362 punt-return yards.
· Denver Broncos punter Corliss Waitman (South Alabama) with 96 punts.

But those league-leading numbers weren’t high enough to be the best in one NFL season by a player from an Alabama high school or college after three single-season records were set in 2021, the first year of the 17-game schedule.

Passing yards: 5,109 by Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston (Hueytown High School) in 2019. 2022: 3,701 by Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts (Alabama).
Touchdown passes: 35 by Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (Auburn) in 2015. 2022: 25 by Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama).
Rushing attempts: 378 by Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry (Alabama) in 2020. 2022: 349 by Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry (Alabama).
