Alabama Roots: 29 $10 million NFL players in 2023

The NFL’s 2023 season concluded on Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime in Super Bowl LVIII. During the league’s 2023 business year, teams paid 218 players at least $10 million.

Twenty-nine of those players came from Alabama high schools and colleges – almost twice as many as last season. In 2022, 15 players with Alabama football roots were paid at least $10 million.

The state’s 29 $10 million players included one first-team All-Pro selection, eight Pro Bowlers and eight players who missed at least five games during the 2023 regular season.

The players with Alabama football roots who were paid at least $10 million by an NFL team in 2023 include (with figures from the sports financial website spotrac.com):

Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne: $31,010,000

The former Shades Valley High School and Alabama standout signed a four-year, $90 million contract extension with Washington in 2023 that included a $28 million signing bonus. In his first season on the contract, Payne started every game and played 924 defensive snaps. He had 53 tackles, four sacks, 13 tackles for loss, 11 quarterback hits, four passes defended, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill: $26,385,000

The former West Alabama standout played the second season of a four-year, $120 million contract extension signed in 2022, although it was restructured in 2023 to give the Dolphins some salary-cap relief. The changes added up to the same amount of money for Hill, who had 119 receptions for 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2023. Hill led the NFL in receiving yards and touchdown receptions, earned selection for the Pro Bowl Games and made first-team All-Pro.

New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams: $26,094,000

The former Wenonah High School and Alabama standout signed a four-year, $96 million contract extension in 2023 that included a $24.5 million signing bonus. Williams started every game and recorded 62 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, 20 quarterback hits, three passes defended, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one safety. Williams was selected for the Pro Bowl Games.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young: $25,353,688

The former Alabama standout signed a four-year, $37.955 million contract that included a signing bonus of $24,603,688 as the No. 1 choice in the 2023 NFL Draft. In 16 starts, Young completed 315-of-527 passes for 2,877 yards with 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions as the Panthers posted the worst record in the NFL at 2-15.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts: $24,304,000

The former Alabama standout signed a five-year, $255 million contract extension that included a $23.294 million signing bonus in 2023. Hurts started every game for Philadelphia in 2023. He completed 352-of-538 passes for 3,858 yards with 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 17 regular-season games. Hurts participated in the Pro Bowl Games.

Houston Texans defensive end Will Anderson: $23,359,328

The former Alabama standout signed a four-year, $35.213 million contract that included a signing bonus of $22,609,328 as the No. 3 selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. In 15 regular-season games, Anderson recorded 45 tackles, seven sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 22 quarterback hits and one pass defended. He helped the Texans reached the divisional round in the playoffs, played in the Pro Bowl Games and won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year awards presented by The Associated Press and Pro Football Writers of America.

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs: $22,304,000

The former Alabama standout signed a five-year, $97 million contract extension that included a $21.25 million signing bonus in 2023. Diggs played in only two games before he sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee at practice and missed the remainder of the season.

Houston Texans offensive lineman Tytus Howard: $20,407,877

The former Monroe County High School and Alabama State standout signed a three-year, $56 million contract extension that included an $18 million signing bonus in 2023. Howard made a position change from right tackle to left guard to help Houston deal with injuries, but he made two trips to injured reserve because of hand and knee injuries and played in seven games.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper: $20,000,000

The former Alabama standout played the fourth season of a five-year, $100 million contract. In 15 regular-season games, Cooper had 72 receptions, 1,250 yards and five touchdowns as he was selected for the Pro Bowl Games.

New York Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley: $17,000,000

The former Theodore High School and Alabama standout played the fourth season of a five-year, $85 million contract. Mosley started every game for the Jets in 2023. He recorded 152 tackles, one-half sack, five tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, one interception, seven passes defended, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson: $16,400,280

The former Alabama standout signed a four-year, $57 million contract that included a $15.085 million signing bonus as a free agent in 2023. In 16 starts, Tomlinson had 28 tackles, three sacks, four tackles for loss and 12 quarterback hits.

Indianapolis Colts offensive tackle Braden Smith: $16,000,000

The former Auburn standout played the second season of a four-year, $70 million contract extension. Smith played a career-low 10 games as a variety of injuries caused him to miss seven games in 2023.

Washington Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen: $15,441,168

The former Alabama standout played the second season of a four-year, $72 million contract extension. In 16 games, Allen recorded 53 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 19 quarterback hits and one pass defended in 2023.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis: $14,852,944

The former Auburn standout played the second season of a three-year, $44.5 million contact extension. Davis missed five games in 2023, when he recorded 52 tackles, two interceptions and nine passes defended.

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick: $14,500,000

The former Alabama standout played the second season of a five-year, $73.612 million contract extension. Fitzpatrick played a career-low 10 regular-season games as hamstring and knee injuries sidelined him for seven games in 2023. Fitzpatrick recorded 64 tackles, one tackle for loss and three passes defended.

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Cam Robinson: $13,297,382

The former Alabama standout played the second season of a three-year, $54 million contract extension. Robinson missed the first four games of the season serving a suspension for violating the NFL’s Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances and four games in December while on injured reserve in 2023.

Chicago Bears safety Eddie Jackson: $13,100,000

The former Alabama standout played the third season of a four-year, $58.4 million contract extension. Jackson missed five of the first eight games in 2023 with injuries. In 12 games, he recorded 37 tackles, one interception and five passes defended.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean: $12,882,343

The former Auburn standout signed a four-year, $52 million contract that included an $11.42 million signing bonus in 2023. Injuries cost Dean four games in 2023. In 13 regular-season games, Dean recorded 61 tackles, four passes defended and two fumble recoveries.

Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Jonah Williams: $12,604,000

The former Alabama standout played 2023 on the club option for a fifth season on his rookie contract. Williams played all 1,088 Cincinnati offensive snaps in 2023 at right tackle after switching from left tackle.

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Darious Williams: $12,000,000

The former UAB standout played the second season of a three-year, $30 million contract extension. Williams started every game in 2023. He recorded 53 tackles, four interceptions, 19 passes defended and two fumble recoveries.

Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs: $11,391,000

The former Alabama standout signed a one-year contract in 2023 when he and the Raiders couldn’t reach agreement on a long-term contract after Las Vegas used its franchise tag on Jacobs. A quadriceps injury caused Jacobs to miss the final four games of the season. In 2023, Jacobs had 805 yards and six touchdowns on 233 carries and 296 yards on 37 receptions.

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley: $11,116,000

The former Alabama standout played in 2023 on the fifth-year option on his rookie contract that had been picked up by the Atlanta Falcons in 2021. Ridley served a year-long suspension in 2022 for violating the NFL’s gambling policy. Ridley had 76 receptions for 1,016 yards and eight touchdowns in 17 regular-season games in 2023.

Jacksonville Jaguars outside linebacker Josh Allen: $10,892,000

The former Abbeville High School standout played 2023 on the club option for a fifth season on his rookie contract. Allen recorded 66 tackles, 17.5 sacks, 17 tackles for loss, 33 quarterback hits, one interception and two forced fumbles. Allen was selected for the Pro Bowl Games.

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs: $10,728,276

The former Alabama standout signed a four-year, $17,845,130 contract that included a $9,978,276 signing bonus as the 12th selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. Gibbs ran for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns on 182 carries and caught 52 passes for 316 yards and one touchdown in 15 regular-season games and ran for a touchdown in each of Detroit’s three playoff contests. Gibbs made the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-Rookie team.

Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry: $10,500,000

The former Alabama standout completed a four-year, $50 million contract in 2023. Henry ran for 1,167 yards and 12 touchdowns on a league-leading 280 carries and caught 28 passes for 214 yards in 17 games. Henry was selected for the Pro Bowl Games.

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey: $10,500,000

The former Hoover High School and Alabama standout played the second season of a five-year, $97.5 million contract extension. Training-camp foot surgery caused Humphrey to miss the first four games of the season, and he missed three more later in the campaign. In a career-low 10 regular-season games, Humphrey recorded 26 tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception and five passes defended.

Cleveland Browns defensive end Za’Darius Smith: $10,500,000

The former Greenville High School standout played the final season of a three-year, $42 million contract that was restructured after he was traded by the Minnesota Vikings to the Browns in May. In 16 regular-season games, Smith recorded 27 tackles, 5.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss, 20 quarterback hits, three passes defended and one forced fumble in 2023.

Indianapolis Colts center Ryan Kelly: $10,125,000

The former Alabama standout played the third season of a four-year, $50 million contract extension in 2023, when he started 14 games and was selected for the Pro Bowl Games.

New England Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones: $10,000,000

The former Auburn standout signed a two-year, $19 million contract extension that included a $7.5 million signing bonus in 2023. In 14 games, Jones recorded 48 tackles and seven passes defended.
