Alabama rises in coaches top 25 poll rankings after Tennessee win
Alabama football stayed in the same spot as last week in the US LBM Coaches top 25 poll on Sunday, after beating Tennessee at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday in a second-half comeback. The Crimson Tide is ranked No. 8nationally on the coaches poll.
The coaches poll is based on the votes of 66 FBS head coaches, including Alabama’s Nick Saban. Alabama’s highest ranking on any ballot this week was No. 3, and the lowest was No. 12.
Alabama was also ranked No. 8 last week, though it was tied with Texas, which jumped to No. 7 and kept Alabama in the same spot. Following their loss, the Volunteers took a tumble in the rankings, dropping to No. 20 in the coaches poll after previously being ranked 15th.
The Associated Press media poll is scheduled to be updated at 1 p.m. and will likely show movement upward for the Tide. Alabama was ranked No. 11 in that poll last week.
Besides the win over Tennessee, Alabama’s spot in the rankings was aided by some poor performances from schools above it. Penn State had been ranked sixth in the coaches poll and was undefeated before a 20-12 loss at Ohio State Saturday.
With the loss, the Nittany Lions dropped to No. 10 in the coaches poll.
When the media poll is released, UA will likely pass North Carolina, which was ranked No. 10 last week. The Tar Heels lost to Virginia.
Alabama had a shaky first half to Saturday’s game against the Volunteers. Tennessee took a 20-6 lead to the locker room, a margin that could have been more had UT been able to capitalize on several opportunities early on.
When the Crimson Tide got the ball to start the second half, it instantly flipped the momentum. A 29-yard run by Jase McClellan and a 46-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Milroe to Isaiah Bond pulled Alabama within one score, and the comeback continued from there.
The Crimson Tide will be able to get some rest, with a bye this weekend. UA will be back in action on Nov. 4
