Alabama rises in coaches poll top 25 rankings after Mercer win, losses for Tennessee and BYU
Alabama football took care of business against Mercer on Saturday, winning 52-7 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The victory over the FCS opponent came as no surprise, but it was enough to elevate the Crimson Tide when the coaches poll top 25 was updated Sunday morning.
The Tide jumped up two positions in the poll, moving from No. 9 to No. 7. UA was aided by Tennessee and BYU both losing and taking significant tumbles down the standings.
Alabama sits one spot ahead of Georgia, which it beat earlier in the season, and two ahead of Ole Miss. Oddly, the Rebels also beat the Bulldogs this year but were not rewarded for the win in the coaches poll.
Oregon, which survived a scare at Wisconsin Saturday, remained in the No. 1 spot. Ohio State sits at No. 2, while Texas remained third.
Penn State moved up one spot to fourth in the coaches poll, while Indiana jumped a position to No. 5. Notre Dame was the only other team ahead of Alabama in that poll, sitting sixth.
Miami rounded out the coaches poll top 10, while Tennessee sat 11th, after falling to Georgia in Athens. BYU fell to No. 15 with its loss to Kansas.
Two Alabama opponents fell out of the coaches top 25, with Missouri and LSU both losing. The Associated Press media poll will be updated later on Sunday, while the next College Football Playoff rankings will be unveiled Tuesday evening.
