Alabama reveals details of Nate Oats’ new contract: Salary, buyout and more

Alabama basketball head coach Nate Oats received a healthy raise on Monday, when the UA board of trustees compensation committee approved his new contract. Oats will make $5 million base salary in the first year of his new deal.

By the end of the contract, which now runs for six years, through the 2030 season, Oats will make $7.55 million in base salary. The deal ends on March 14, 2030.

The new deal for Oats was announced on Friday, shortly after the job at Michigan, a state he coached high school basketball in for over a decade, opened.

Alabama athletics director Greg Bryne noted before the committee that the buyout included in the contract is $18 million. According to Byrne, that’s the highest in the country.

Oats is in his fifth season with the Crimson Tide. Alabama has extended him twice before, with his previous deal running through the 2029 season and paying him $4.5 million per year.

The 2023-24 season isn’t yet over for Alabama. The Crimson Tide drew a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will play its first game on Friday against Charleston.

Oats wasn’t the only Alabama coach to get his deal approved. After being hired in January to replace Nick Saban, Kalen DeBoer’s was also stamped by the committee, along with his staff.

The Crimson Tide basketball team also saw multiple assistant contracts get approved. Both Preston Murphy and Ryan Pannone received raises and deals that run through the 2026 season.
