Alabama Republican seeks public’s advice on his election plans as Tuberville eyes governor’s race
As speculation continues to brew on who is running for Alabama Governor next year, possible candidate Will Ainsworth, the state’s lieutenant governor, has asked the public for their advice.
“Some Alabamians have suggested that I run for governor, others have suggested that I run for U.S. Senate if the seat is open, and a few liberal Democrats who dislike conservatives like me have suggested that I return home to Guntersville and leave public service altogether,” he wrote.
“Facebook seems like a good forum to ask my followers a simple question – what do you think I should do next year and why?”
The post has received over 300 responses, with most commentors saying the answer to that question depends on the actions of U.S. Sen Tommy Tuberville, who has been in conversation about the position for months.
“If Tommy Tuberville runs for governor, run for his spot in the senate,” wrote Thomas Lovett Jr. in the most liked comment.
“If he doesn’t, run for governor!!”
“Tuberville knows you’re never gonna run against him and risk splitting the vote,” wrote Amanda Rowell.
“So really, you’re in a standoff as to who declares first. From a political strategy- the smartest thing would be for y’all to sit down for a lunch and come to clear terms on who is running for what and then pour full support and backing behind each other.”
Some want Ainsworth to run against Tuberville but are worried about his chances.
“I prefer you for Governor, but I fear Tuberville will win unfortunately,” wrote Amanda Schulte.
“With that, I think you would make a great Senator to represent AL. I want you as the Governor over Tuberville!”
But others are more confident in a win.
“Whatever the hell Tubs runs for RUN AGAINST HIM,” wrote Sharon Price.
Ainsworth has said that Tuberville’s decision on whether to enter the race would not affect his plans.
“Sen. Tuberville, he’s done a good job,” Ainsworth said previously.
“But that doesn’t have any impact on my decision.”
Many commentors agree that Ainsworth should make the decision solely based on his own motivations.
“Whichever one you choose, do it with kindness, grace, and understanding… which I feel you are more than capable to do,” wrote Patti Yancy.
“Always strive to be a statesman instead of a politician.”
“Your values and leadership could be utilized in either of those directions,” Regina Duvall wrote.
“You would be best judge of what fits you best. Pray and God will guide your steps.”
