Alabama reacts to Trump’s election: What are their hopes, fears for next 4 years?
Many Alabamians say they hope for a stronger economy, secure borders, and decreased inflation over the next four years following the announcement that Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States on Wednesday.
But others say they are just hoping to make it through his second presidency.
On Nov. 6 AL.com asked readers “When it comes to Alabama specifically, what do you hope for in a second Donald Trump term? And for the country generally?” on Facebook.
The post has received nearly 700 responses as of 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. And a majority of commentors say they are worried about the same things.
One commentor is hoping for “a stronger economy that will allow middle class families to sleep a little easier at night, spend a little less at the grocery store and gas stations.”
“I’m also hoping for lower interest rates and just to feel safer and more secure, in general,” she wrote.
The comment received more than 20 likes, and the majority of respondents seem to agree with similar comments.
“Economically better all around,” wrote another. “Made an existentially higher salary under his last presidency than I have the last 4 years. My main concern is being able to live rather than barely survive.”
Some say they are hoping for a more united nation moving forward.
“Unity has to be on the top of the agenda as we can’t be BFF’s on Saturday game day and hate each on Sunday morning,” one man wrote in a comment that has received dozens of likes so far.
But not all are hopeful following Wednesday’s announcement. Several commentors say they are simply hoping to survive the next four years.
“I don’t expect anything from a state that overwhelmingly voted for Fascism over Democracy,” reads one of the post’s top performing comments, which currently has over 70 likes. “I am disappointed and heartbroken. This election will set our country, women and people of color back 100+ years.”
