Alabama RB commit returns to Montgomery for final year

Anthony Rogers wanted to finish his high school career in his hometown.

The Alabama running back commit has transferred from IMG Academy to Carver High in Montgomery for his senior year.

He helped another Montgomery-area school, Pike Road, to the Class 5A state title in 2021.

“I just wanted to come back home and spend my last year with my family before I go off to college,” Rogers told AL.com on Monday night.

The 5-foot-8, 185-pound Rogers is the No. 7 rising senior recruit in the state, according to the 247 composite rankings. He committed to the Crimson Tide in June and said he remains committed despite the retirement of Nick Saban. He also said he plans to take visits this spring and summer.

As a Pike Road freshman in 2021, he alternated in the backfield with former Ole Miss and current Ohio State star Quinshon Judkins. Rogers rushed for 839 yards and 13 touchdowns and caught six touchdown passes that season for coach Patrick Browning.

As a sophomore playing for coach Ed Rigby, Rogers rushed for 1,626 yards and 22 touchdowns on 187 carries as the Patriots moved up to Class 6A. He also had two TD receptions and returned a kickoff for a score. He was a first-team All-State selection.

The 4-star prospect announced a year ago he had transferred to IMG. He rushed for 316 yards and 5 TDs on 41 carries.

“I think my football knowledge improved,” Rogers said of his time in Florida. He transferred to Carver last month.

“He’s an incredible kid,” new Wolverines coach Bobby Carr said. “He’s a good teammate. He has great work ethic. He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do. He grew up with a lot of guys who are playing for us, so it’s a good mix. He really is a delight to be around. When your really good players are even better people, it sure makes it a pleasure to coach.”

The Wolverines went 7-4 a year ago, losing to Briarwood in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs. Having merged with rival Sidney Lanier, Carver moves to Class 7A this fall. The Wolverines will play in Region 2 along with reigning state champ Central-Phenix City, Enterprise, Auburn, Dothan, Opelika, Percy Julian, Prattville and Smiths Station.

When asked about his goals for his senior season, Rogers said simply, “It would be nice if we could win a state championship.”

Rogers is one of four Top 20 rising seniors who have committed to Alabama, joining Southside-Selma WR Derick Smith, Saraland DT Antonio Coleman and T.R. Miller LB Myles Johnson.
