Alabama raising fees for electric, plug-in vehicle registration
Drivers of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will soon pay more for registration in Alabama.
The Rebuild Alabama Act, passed in 2019, requires owners of battery electric vehicles to pay an additional registration fee of $200. Owners of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are required to pay $100.
Those fees went into effect Jan. 1, 2020 with a $3 increase beginning July 1 and then every fourth year, bumping the current fees to $203 and $103.
The standard motor vehicle registration fee in Alabama is $65.

After years of lagging behind other states, Alabama is seeing an increase in the number of EVs on the road. From 2020 to 2021, new electric vehicle registrations in Alabama jumped 60% and those numbers continue to climb.
There’s also a greater emphasis on building EV charging stations around the state, something that’s desperately needed. A recent analysis showed the state placed 48th in the country on the number of charging stations per 10,000 registered EVs.
Currently, there are just 2.3 electric vehicle charging stations per 10,000 registered vehicles, far behind the national average of 9.7 outlets per 10,000 vehicles.
