Alabama QB Tyler Buchner announces transfer to Notre Dame lacrosse

Alabama football quarterback Tyler Buchner made the news that has been widely reported official on Wednesday. He’s transferring back to Notre Dame to finish out his college career as a lacrosse player.

Buchner confirmed the news on social media in the midst of the first day of the early signing period for the recruiting class of 2024.

“I am excited to return to ND to play lacrosse and graduate in May,” Buchner said in the post. “Prior to that, I’ll be continuing my initial commitment to Alabama Football through the playoff and finishing what I started. I can’t thank everyone enough for their continued support.”

Buchner transferred to Tuscaloosa this season after an injury-impacted 2022 season as a quarterback at Notre Dame. He followed Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees from South Bend.

He competed for the starting job throughout camp and the early portion of the season with Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson. Milroe started against Middle Tennessee State and Texas to start the season, but Buchner was behind center to begin the South Florida game.

He struggled in that matchup and was replaced by Simpson in the second half. Buchner has not seen the field since that game.

Buchner was reported to have entered the portal as a lacrosse player once it opened, having once been recruited for that sport before opting to focus on football coming out of high school. He will join a Notre Dame lacrosse program that is the defending NCAA national champion.

He’ll stick around for at least one more game with Alabama. The Crimson Tide faces Michigan in the College Football Playoff’s Rose Bowl semifinal on Jan. 1.

The winner of that game will face either Texas or Washington in the national championship game, which is scheduled for Jan. 8 in Houston, Texas.
