Alabama QB Buchner reportedly will transfer back to Notre Dame for lacrosse

Not long after making a splash by entering the transfer portal for a different sport, Alabama football quarterback Tyler Buchner reportedly has his new destination. According to Inside Lacrosse, Buchner intends to head back to his prior school, Notre Dame, but this time as as a lacrosse player.

Buchner will reportedly finish the season with the Crimson Tide before making the move. He has completed eight passes for 61 yards throughout the 2023 campaign.

Buchner played quarterback at Notre Dame before transferring to Alabama ahead of the 2023 season. He followed offensive coordinator Tommy Rees from South Bend to Tuscaloosa.

He competed for the starting job in the offseason with Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson. Buchner started Alabama’s Week 3 game at South Florida.

Milroe won the job and went on to become a star for Alabama this season, earning second-team all-SEC honors from the Associated Press. Buchner fell down the depth chart.

Notre Dame lacrosse won the 2023 NCAA tournament. The Irish have made six final fours in program history, five since 2010.

Buchner was an excellent lacrosse player in high school, reportedly committing to Michigan to play that sport before opting to focus on football. He would likely have to sit out a year after a transfer if he continued to play football, but will be able to compete immediately in lacrosse.

His Alabama football season still has at least one more game. The Crimson Tide faces Michigan in the College Football Playoff’s Rose Bowl semifinal on Jan. 1 in Pasadena.
