Alabama police chase ends in fatal crash as car sinks in Intracoastal Waterway

A 21-year-old man from Elberta died early Friday at the end of a police pursuit in Orange Beach, state troopers said.

Brooks H. Kaechele died when his car left the road at about 1:23 a.m. during the pursuit, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. He was not wearing a seat belt, troopers said.

Kaechele’s 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse hit a guardrail, several traffic signs and trees, a wooden deck, wooden boardwalk and boardwalk poles, troopers said. It overturned and went fully underwater in the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway. Kaechele was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers said Orange Beach police were pursuing Kaechele at the time. The crash happened on Alabama 180 inside the Orange Beach city limits in Baldwin County.

State troopers are investigating.
