Alabama pit bull mix euthanized over woman’s attack in case that reached state’s highest court
A dog which reportedly attacked a Marshall County woman 16 months ago was euthanized this morning following several court challenges.
WAFF is reporting that Havoc was euthanized at 11:30 a.m., citing Guntersville City Prosecutor Kelsey Yoste. The procedure had already been postponed last month, and the dog’s owner also filed an unsuccessful federal lawsuit in hopes of stopping the procedure.
The dog was the subject of a lawsuit which made it all the way to the Alabama Supreme Court.
Havoc reportedly injured a woman in September 2021, causing tears in her scalp and arm. She was treated at Huntsville Hospital and required multiple skin-grafting surgeries.
The City of Guntersville impounded the dog following a court hearing the following month. The dog’s disposition was handled according to “Emily’s Law,” a 2018 state law named for Emily Colvin, the 24-year-old victim in a fatal 2017 dog attack.
After a hearing, the dog’s owner, Valina Jackson, was arrested in November 2021, along with two other people, for allegedly breaking into the animal shelter where the dog was being held, and taking him.
The Alabama Supreme Court later affirmed a decision to euthanize the dog. Jackson was also ordered to reimburse the city of Guntersville for the costs of holding Havoc.
