Alabama pastor, 72, allegedly pistol-whips man then returns to apologize

Roy Powell, pastor of Saraland’s Cedar Street Missionary Baptist Church, has been released on bond after allegedly pistol-whipping a man during a robbery.

According to court documents, the 72-year-old Powell took a man’s book bag at gunpoint on Mobile Street.

The alleged victim, who told KMVT he doesn’t want to be identified, said he was walking to the post office when Powell was walking toward him on the sidewalk and bumped into him.

“He said, ‘you was in my way, I’m walking down the sidewalk,’ and we had words back and forth,” he told the outlet.

He said Powell left the scene after the argument and then returned with a gun he used to pistol-whip him in the head.

Powell later returned to apologize, according to court documents.

He was arrested on Wednesday and charged with first-degree robbery, then released on a $40,000 bond Thursday, according to court documents.

As of Friday, the church has not made any public comment about Powell’s arrest.

Efforts to reach the church were not immediately successful.
