Alabama offers at-home testing for sexually transmitted diseases
A program for at-home testing for sexually transmitted diseases will continue in Alabama in 2023.
The Alabama Department of Public Health has renewed its STD/HIV home specimen collection kit program. The initiative, a partnership with BINX Health, allows users to test for a range of STDs through urine, swab samples or blood from a finger stick.
Specimen collection kits are mailed to the patient’s home with the completed sample mailed back to the lab in a prepaid envelope. Results are returned to a clinician who follows up with the patient.
The purpose of the program is to promote testing as a way to strengthen the STD/HIV prevention and control. According to ADPH, 1 in 2 sexually active young people will get an STD before age 25 and most are unaware.
