Alabama nonprofit tackles diaper need with 24-hour event
Need diapers? Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank is hosting a 24-hour diaper wrapping event.
Bundles of Hope is a nonprofit that provides diapers to Alabama families in need. On June 6 starting at 11 a.m., the nonprofit will celebrate their tenth anniversary with their first annual Wrapathon, wrapping bundles of a truckload of diapers to later distribute to families in need.
“We know that diapers are super expensive, even for those who are working. So we’re just here to serve families that are in need,” Jan Lockhart, the Bundles of Hope operations manager, told AL.com
“We’re just trying to help meet that need as much as we can to just help families get ahead and help families feel more confident when it comes to a healthy baby.”
An average monthly supply of diapers costs $80 to more than $100, according to the National Diaper Bank Network.
Diapers are not covered by government programs such as SNAP or WIC. And one in two U.S. families with young children cannot afford enough diapers to keep their infant or child clean, dry and healthy, according to the Network.
Additionally, many child care facilities require parents to drop off diapers with their children. According to the Network, one in four U.S. parents miss work or school because they can’t afford diapers.
It’s a problem affecting many families.
That’s where Bundles of Hope stepped in.
In 2014, a group of women from Mountain Chapel Methodist Church were planning a baby shower for a single mother.
After much discussion and research, they found that the high cost of diapers was a widespread and urgent issue for families across Alabama.
Within their first year, Bundles of Hope distributed almost 20,000 diapers to families in need. Today, the nonprofit distributes 250,000 to 300,000 diapers a month.
Since 2015, Bundles of Hope has distributed over 10 million diapers across 47 Alabama counties and serves over 5,000 babies each month.
Community members can pick up free diapers at the Bundle of Hope Diaper Bank headquarters in downtown Birmingham on Wednesdays at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. or at any of their partner locations across Alabama.
“Parents are very excited that there’s a program out there that helps with diapers…Diapers aren’t that easily accessible. So we’re getting good responses from our clients on the importance of having these services,” Lockhart said.
Families receiving diapers from Bundles of Hope have reported that their babies are happier and healthier, and they feel less stress and more financially stable, according to the nonprofit’s recent client survey.
For the Wrapathon, Bundles of Hope is coordinating volunteer teams who will wrap diapers around the clock for 24 hours.
The event is sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield and PNC. It will be held at Bundles of Hope’s headquarters, located at 1430 Reverend Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd, Birmingham, AL 35203.
Bundles of Hope relies on community support through volunteer work, diaper drives and donations. Donating $10 a month will support one baby in need of fresh diapers.
To get involved, community members can donate diapers and make financial contributions on the Bundles of Hope website.
“We’re working to make sure that families are able to receive basic needs,” Lockhart said.
“We try to take a little bit of that weight off with about a week or two worth of diapers so mom can maybe use that money towards rent, or utilities or even food…We know that things are hard out there, so we want to lighten your load a little bit.”
