Alabama native showcased on NPR’s ‘Tiny Desk’ concert series
To call Alabama native Katie Crutchfield’s new appearance on “Tiny Desk” a triumphant return might be selling it short: In an accompanying article, National Public Radio describes her as “one of the most profound lyricists of the 21st century” and a veteran who’s become “cool and cozy” in the spotlight.
The episode is a study in contrasts. Crutchfield, who performs under the name Waxahatchee, previously appeared on the NPR showcase in 2013. Then she was a nervous solo artist with “baby bangs” and a shy demeanor. This time around, she’s clearly much more confident and is backed by a full band that helps deliver a richer, Americana-laced sound.
Crutchfield was born in the Birmingham area and gained notice in the city’s music scene while still in high school. In 2024 she released “Tigers Blood,” her sixth Waxahatchee album, to acclaim. It’s nominated for a Grammy for Best Americana Album, and a new Rolling Stone article on the evolution of Southern Rock mentions it as one of the year’s best records.
Tracks included in the new “Tiny Desk” set include Waxahatchee’s latest single, “Much Ado About Nothing,” and “Right Back to It,” a tune that NPR Music previously ranked among its “124 Best Songs of 2024.”
Earlier this year, Waxahatchee was featured on “CBS Saturday Morning’s” performance showcase, the “Saturday Sessions.”
