Alabama mother makes 7-year-old son walk from school, then runs him over, police say
Boaz police have arrested two women after investigators say a woman drove over her own child with her car in the act of punishing him.
Sarai Rachel James, 27, has been charged with aggravated child abuse in connection with the incident that happened Feb. 9, according to court documents. She was released from Marshall County Jail on $50,000 bond.
A 53-year-old woman, who police say was in the vehicle at the time, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, and was released on $500 bond.
According to police, James picked up her seven-year-old son from school and learned from the principal that he had gotten into trouble that day.
Investigators say a “short distance” from the school, James stopped her vehicle and made the boy get out, telling him he had to walk or run the rest of the way to their home, approximately eight blocks from the school.
According to police, the boy attempted to grab the door handle of the car, but the mother accelerated, pulling the boy under the vehicle and running over him with the rear tire.
The child was transported to UAB by ambulance with abrasions.
“It was a miracle he was not hurt worse than what he could have been,” Police Chief Michael Abercrombie said.
According to court documents, James cannot have any contact with her son.
