Alabama men’s basketball teases new uniforms ahead of Texas A&M game

Nate Oats likes the old ‘block-A’ logo that Alabama abandoned at the turn of the century. Since 2004, the encircled script-A circle has represented one of the most dominant college programs in the country. Could a throwback be in line for this weekend?

On Monday, the Tide men’s basketball account tweeted two videos teasing new threads for No. 15 UA’s Saturday matchup against Texas A&M (11 a.m. on ESPN).

While nothing has been confirmed — aside from a glimpse of the old logo — Oats commented on the potential historical significance of the uniforms.

“I did hear something about that,” Oats told reporters before speaking to the Birmingham Tip Off Club on Monday afternoon. “The players are all fired up. I think they did a quick peek for the players. … It’s for this weekend’s game cause I think they’re bringing back (Antoine) Pettway’s team that won.”

This year is the 20th anniversary of the lone Tide team to reach the NCAA Tournament’s Elite 8. That squad was led by head coach Mark Gottfried and featured Kennedy Winson and Pettway, an Alabama assistant coach for six years.

Those uniforms featured a trace outline of the letters and piping near the shoulders. The block-A was plastered on each side of the shorts, including more piping on the bottom.

Last offseason, Pettway was one of the three assistants who left for head coaching positions. Pettway took over Kennesaw State and currently has a 13-12 record and 4-7 mark in the ASUN Conference. Kennesaw State will host North Florida on Friday night, opening a window for Pettway to return to Coleman Coliseum.

“I don’t know if the uniforms are gonna look like Pettway’s team. Those are kinda cool. I don’t know what (new ones) are,” Oats added. ” … I do like the old ‘A.’”
