Alabama men’s basketball adds transfer in West Virginia big Mohamed Wague

Alabama men’s basketball has added a fourth transfer. Mohamed Wague, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound forward from West Virginia, announced his commitment on Wednesday morning.

Wague is the latest player to leave the Mountaineers following the resignation of former coach Bob Huggins. Wague’s arrival gives Nate Oats a second big from the transfer cycle and another piece to reload for the 2023-24 season.

After winning a New York City Public School Championship in 2019 as a high schooler, Wague became a standout at Harcum (Pa.) College, a JUCO program. He became a first-team All-American by averaging 14.8 points and 11.9 rebounds a game before appearing in 28 games for West Virginia last season.

Wague averaged 10.6 minutes per game, never starting but contributing an average of 4.1 points and 3.1 rebounds a contest. He also recorded 15 total blocks and 12 steals. Wague’s season-high was an 11-point effort against Pittsburgh on Nov. 11, 2022.

Following the departure of a pair of first-round NBA Draft selections and three assistant coaches, the Crimson Tide can now showcase Wague and North Dakota State transfer Grant Nelson in the frontcourt. Wague’s size should help compensate for the surprising loss of Charles Bediako and the anticipated departures of Noah Gurley and Noah Clowney.

Behind the 6-foot-11 Nelson, Wague becomes one of the taller players on Oats’ roster. Alabama’s size was a calling card of its Sweet 16 team, controlling key rebounds and forcing turnovers. Four-star commit Jarin Stevenson, who reclassified to be eligible this year, has a chance to make an impact at a listed 6-foot-10.

Alabama showed interest in Wague’s former teammate Joe Toussaint but that fizzled before the guard decide upon Texas Tech on Tuesday. On Monday, the Tide rounded out its coaching staff with the official hire of Preston Murphy.

Pending any other departures, Wague should fill out Alabama’s scholarship limit as the 13th signee. Other bigs coming in include Stevenson, Nelson, Sam Walters and Mouhamed Dioubate.
