Alabama man used child as human shield, dared officers to shoot, police say
Florence police say a man used a child as a shield when encountering police Saturday, daring an officer to shoot.
Sgt. Cliff Billingsley of Florence police said the incident happened at about 3 p.m. Saturday in the 1900 block of Holiday Drive.
Officers responding to a domestic violence call found a woman who said that she had just gotten into a fight with her boyfriend, identified as Christopher Borquez, 37, of Florence. Borquez had just left the area with their child.
According to Billingsley, Borquez returned to the residence with the child while an officer was on the scene. Borquez was ordered out of the car. He exited the vehicle, still holding the child, telling the officer he would have to shoot him, Billingsley said.
The officer was able to talk Borquez into releasing the child. The officer then attempted to lead Borquez away from the child. However, Billingsley said, Borquez jerked away and repeated the officer would have to shoot him.
He also resisted while the officer attempted to handcuff him.
Borquez has been charged with domestic violence strangulation, endangering the welfare of a child, public intoxication, interference with a domestic violence emergency call and resisting arrest.
He is being held at the Lauderdale County Detention Center on $35,900 bond.
