Alabama man pleads guilty to beating roommate to death over stolen Pop-Tart

A 59-year-old Alabama man has pleaded guilty in the beating death of his roommate over a Pop-Tart theft.

Daryl Miley, of Ozark, has pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor crime of criminally negligent homicide in the 2024 death of 63-year-old Billy Joe Maynard, court records show.

Mile was sentenced to 12 months in the Dale County Jail.

According to Ozark police, an ambulance was called April 4, 2024 to Maynard’s home on Walton Street. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Maynard was able to tell investigators that the assault had happened days earlier. He later died.

The autopsy showed that Maynard died from blunt force trauma. He sustained three broken ribs and ruptured spleen.

During an interview with investigators, police said, Miley confessed to hitting Maynard with a metal pipe in the stomach area. He told them they were in a heated argument over the reported Pop-Tart theft.
