Alabama man convicted of sexually abusing child on Native American reservation

An Alabama man was convicted by an Oklahoma federal jury of sexually abusing a child on a Native American reservation, prosecutors announced Thursday.

Dennis Hebert, 38, of Phenix City, was found guilty of one count of aggravated sexual abuse, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern of District of Oklahoma.

At trial, evidence was presented that Hebert sexually abused the victim in 2021 in McAlester, Okla., prosecutors said. The incident occurred within the boundaries of the Choctaw Nation Reservation.

The jury also heard from a government witness who testified to being sexually abused by Hebert as a child.

Federal prosecutors tried then case instead of tribal police because the victim was a member of a federally recognized Native American tribe.

Tribal police and the FBI investigated the case.

Hebert’s trial began Monday and ended with a guilty verdict Wednesday.
