An Alabama man faces up to 99 years in prison after he was convicted of manslaughter Monday in the 2018 shooting death of a 21-year-old man, prosecutors said.

A Chilton County jury convicted 29-year-old Clanton resident Jermink Lykes after a five-day manslaughter trial for the shooting death of 21-year-old Alex Postell in Clanton four years ago, said C.J. Robinson, district attorney for the 19th Judicial District of Alabama, which includes Clanton, Elmore and Autauga counties.

Postell was shot and killed around 3 a.m. on Oct. 21, 2018 in Ollie Park, behind the Clanton YMCA.

“We respect the jury’s decision and we appreciate their service,” Robinson said in a statement. “The Postell family was our driving motivation to continue fighting for justice. They were our rock, and I couldn’t be more proud to stand beside them today.”

Manslaughter is a Class B felony that usually has a sentencing range between 2 and 20 years, but sentencing enhancements applicable to Lykes’ case means he can be sentenced to between 15 to 99 years, Robinson said.

It was immediately unclear which enhancements could be applied to Lykes’ sentence.

Chilton County District Court Judge Ben Fuller scheduled Lykes’ sentencing for Nov. 16.
