Alabama man claims $1 million prize in Florida lottery
An Auburn man is now nearly a millionaire.
Alex Mendoza Moreno claimed the $1 million prize Friday in the Florida Lottery 500X THE CASH Scratch-Off game at the lottery headquarters in Tallahassee. And though Mendoza Moreno’s winning ticket was worth $1 million, he’s not quite a millionaire. The lottery said he chose to accept a one-time, lump-sum payment of $820,000.

The lottery said Mendoza Moreno purchased the winning ticket at Food Mart in Cantonment. It’s a suburb north of Pensacola on the Alabama border – about 30 miles east of the Buc-ee’s on Interstate 10 in Robertsdale. The business will receive a $2,000 bonus commission from the lottery for selling a winning ticket.
The Scratch-Off game that paid off for Mendoza Moreno is the Florida Lottery’s most popular game – accounting for 77 percent of ticket sales in 2021-2022, the lottery said. The games have yielded about $17.69 billion for education in Florida, the lottery said.
