Alabama man charged in murder, kidnapping of pregnant Florida teen Anastasia Gilley

An Alabama man who is a convicted sex offender has been charged in the death of a pregnant Florida teen whose body was found Wednesday after she had been missing for one week.

Marquis Devan McCloud, 33, is being held without bond in the Houston County Jail. He is charged in the slaying of 19-year-old Anastasia Gilley. The charge is capital murder during a kidnapping.

Gilley’s remains were found in Houston County in Wednesday’s predawn hours.

Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza in a Thursday press conference said the suspect and victim were acquaintances.

“They knew each other,’’ Valenza said, adding that investigators believe Gilley was held against her will in Houston County.

“At one point she may have willfully met him,’’ the sheriff said, “but (at some point) she was held against her will during those days.”

Gilley was last seen at her Jackson County, Florida, home on May 3. She was four months pregnant.

Her sister posted on Facebook that someone heard her scream near her home about 10:30 p.m. that Wednesday and she had not been heard from or seen since then.

Her phone, purse and other personal belongings were found at her home. Also, her sister said, she didn’t show up for work and missed a doctor appointment.

Valenza said his office was notified about Gilley’s disappearance on Sunday. A joint investigation by Houston County and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in Florida ensued.

The sheriff said his investigators alone put in a combine total of 660 manpower hours on the probe since Sunday.

About 2 a.m. Wednesday, they received information that Gilley’s body could be in the area of Headland Avenue. When investigators arrived at the location, they found the decomposed remains of a female.

Though the remains have not yet been confirmed to be those of Gilley, Valenza said clothing and jewelry found at the scene matched what Gilley was last known to be wearing.

He said he believed Gilley had been dead since at least Friday.

“We strongly believe it is her,’’ he said.

McCloud was detained in Houston County earlier in the week in connection with Gilley’s death. Valenza said he has not cooperated with investigators.

Formal charges against him were filed on Wednesday.

A possible motive in the slaying has not been disclosed. Authorities have not confirmed how Gilley was killed, but Valenza said there is some evidence indicating she may have been shot.

Valenza said more charges could be filed in connection with case.

Court records show McCloud pleaded guilty in 2010 to a charge of second-degree rape in Henry County and was sentenced to eight years in prison. He pleaded guilty in 2015 to being a felon in possession of a firearm and violating the state’s sex offender notification laws.

He was charged with first-degree rape, also in Henry County in 2017, but a grand jury in 2018 declined to indict him on that charge.
