Alabama man accused of shooting seagulls, ibis, heron in Louisiana

A 22-year-old Alabama man faces charges of shooting several kinds of birds out-of-season in Louisiana.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said the incident happened May 11 in Calcasieu Parish, located in the state’s southwest corner.

Agents received a tip about a person shooting seagulls at a residence in Lake Charles. Agents responded to the scene the next morning and found several dead birds in an adjoining field, and in a trash can next to the house. Agents also found numerous empty shotgun shells outside the house.

During an inspection, the man pulled into the driveway. The man admitted to shooting the birds with a 12-gauge shotgun the night before during questioning, authorities said.

Agents found 14 seagulls, one ibis and one heron.

The man faces charges of taking non-game birds, taking ibis no season and taking heron no season, as well as potential fines of $400 to $950, and up to 120 days in jail for each offense. There may also be civil restitution totaling $278, according to the department.
