Alabama makes College Football Playoff field after SEC title win
Alabama football fans can breathe a sigh of relief. The Crimson Tide made the College Football Playoff, the selection committee announced Sunday on ESPN.
The news came the day after the Tide upset then-No. 1 Georgia in the SEC championship game in Atlanta. Alabama had been ranked No. 8 entering the week, just as it was every week of the CFP rankings.
The Crimson Tide was the No. 4 ranked team. Alabama will face Michigan in the national semifinals.
The question over whether or not Alabama would make the playoff stemmed from a Week 2 loss to Texas in Tuscaloosa. After that, UA struggled in a win over South Florida.
It took a furious improvement through SEC play for the Crimson Tide to put itself in position to make the field of four. Alabama went undefeated through SEC play, including wins over Tennessee, LSU and Auburn before Saturday’s 27-24 victory over the Bulldogs
Washington and Michigan were both undefeated throughout the season and won their respective conference championship games against Oregon and Iowa respectively. Florida State pulled off the same feat, ignited controversy over whether the Seminoles should make it in over the Crimson Tide despite playing a weaker schedule and losing starting quarterback Jordan Travis to an injury.
Alabama wasn’t the only one-loss team with a chance. Texas, which was the only team to beat the Tide, had just one loss to Oklahoma as well.
In the end, the Tide made it in. The four teams in the playoff included Michigan, Washington and Texas., along with UA.
Florida State finished fifth. Georgia dropped to No. 6 after the loss to the Crimson Tide.
The playoff games this season are the Rose and Sugar Bowls. Alabama will likely be in the Rose.
