Alabama lineman fatally electrocuted devoted to family, helping others

An Alabama lineman who was killed after being electrocuted while helping to restore power in Detroit was remembered as a dedicated family man who loved helping people.

Austin Chappell, a 30-year-old contractor for DTE Energy in Detroit, leaves behind a wife and a 10-year-old daughter, his father, Jeff Chappell, told CBS Detroit.

Austin Chappell died Saturday after being electrocuted when he came in contact with live equipment, DTE Energy said.

The lineman was “just a good man and a good person and even better father and husband,” Jeff Chappell said.

Jeff Chappell said his son, a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, was a hard worker who was hundreds of miles away from home “trying to help people get their power turned back on.”

He said he wanted people to remember lineman like his son the next time there is a power outage.

“I say the next time the power is out, think about these guys. If they are working on these lines, they are out there working on these lines without letting people in,” he said. “They’re doing a very dangerous job. They’re not doing it for the money. They’re doing it to help people.”
