Alabama lands commitment from in-state 4-star Derick Smith

Alabama football landed a big in-state commitment on Monday. Derick Smith, a wideout and defensive back from Southside in Selma, announced his plans to play for the Crimson Tide.

He shared the news in a video posted to his social media.

Smith is a four-star prospect according to the 247Sports composite rankings. The service tabs him as the No. 6 wide receiver nationally, No. 51 overall player in the class of 2025, and the No. 5 prospect in the state of Alabama.

The commitment is a recruiting win for new Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer, who landed Smith over a plethora of other suitors. The wideout also had offers from the likes of Auburn, Georgia and Texas among others.

Smith became the fifth commitment for Alabama in the class of 2025. He became the highest-ranked player on the 247Sports composite to join the class for the Crimson Tide.

Four of the five of the commitments so far have come from in-state players, with athlete Zymear Smith from Maryland the only exception. Smith joins running back Anthony Rogers, defensive lineman Antonio Coleman, and athlete Miles Johnson as in-state commitments for the Tide.

Smith caught 46 passes for 1,487 yards and 14 touchdowns last season at Southside, according to Maxpreps. He also contributed in the run game, with 65 carries for 1,036 yards and nine touchdowns.

The six-foot-1, 185-pound Smith also played defense, putting up 74 total tackles and 11 sacks.
