Alabama lands Caleb Downs, Kadyn Proctor on freshman all-SEC team

Alabama football landed two players on the freshman all-SEC team, the league announced on Thursday. Safety Caleb Downs and offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor both found their way on the list.

Downs had previously been named the SEC’s freshman of the year award. He took over a starting job in the defensive backfield this season and instantly impressed.

The former five-star prospect currently leads Alabama in tackles with 99. He also has two interceptions, three pass breakups and returned a punt for a touchdown against Chattanooga.

He earned second-team all-SEC honors, along with the all-freshman designation.

Proctor took over Alabama’s left tackle spot at the start of the season, splitting some snaps with Elijah Pritchett at that position. He struggled early on in the year, but has improved as the 2023 season has gone along.

“We’ve talked about on several occasions him developing confidence in what he’s supposed to do, how he’s supposed to do it, why he’s supposed to do it that way,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said in November. “The improved communication of the offensive line I think has contributed to that development of confidence. I think that’s the one word that when you have success, which he has had more success in recent games, that really helps build confidence and an expectation that you can do things at a high level.”

Both Proctor and Downs aren’t done with their freshman seasons quite yet. The Crimson Tide has at least one more game after winning the SEC title on Saturday against Georgia.

Alabama will be back in action on Jan. 1 against Michigan in the Rose Bowl, a College Football Playoff semifinal game.
