Alabama lands Aiden Sherrell, highest-rated center prospect in program history

Alabama men’s basketball reached a recruiting milestone on Tuesday. Aiden Sherrell became the highest-rated center to ever commit to the program.

Sherrell is first player to join Nate Oats’ class of 2024 and the fifth five-star Oats has brought to Tuscaloosa, joining Josh Primo (2020), JD Davison (2021), Jaden Bradley and Brandon Miller (2022).

Sherrell is listed at 6-foot-10 and held over 20 offers. He visited Ohio State, Oklahoma and others in addition to UA. His finalists were the Buckeyes, Sooners, Texas and Michigan State. 247Sports Composite ranks Sherrell as the No. 22 senior in the country and fourth-best center.

Sherrell is from Norcross, Ga., and will play his senior year at Prolific (Calif.) Prep. He’ll be teammates with two other blue-chip prospects and potential Tide targets, forward Derrion Reid and Zoom Diallo.

247Sports director of scouting and CBS Sports insider Adam Finkelstein wrote of Sherrell: “First, he’s an athletic big man who is approaching seven feet and yet is a fluid mover, runner, and explosive leaper. He can change ends, catch lobs well above the rim, hammer big dunks, and play above the rim on the defensive end. He also possesses some natural skill. He has a soft touch, not just around the rim but facing up. He can make some high released mid-range jumpers and can even make an occasional three, showing long-term potential to space the floor both vertically and to the arc. … the bottom line is that while he’s already one of the best big men in the country, he’s still a ways away from what he could be.”

Sherrell’s commitment is a massive win for Oats, adding another marquee name to his Alabama tenure months after all three assistants departed for head coach openings.

With its first verbal pledge now added to the class, Alabama is 30th in 247Sports team rankings and fifth in the Southeastern Conference.
