Alabama in the NFL: Tide’s numbers continue to climb

Alabama became the first college football program to have 70 of its alumni play in NFL regular-season games in the same year. That happened in 2022, when more former Crimson Tide standouts played in the NFL than in the previous season for the sixth straight year.

And 2023 might be seven in a row.

As NFL teams open the OTA portion of their offseason schedule this week, 83 Alabama alumni are on NFL rosters. After teams get a longer look at what they have during their offseason work, that number could increase for training camp because 12 former Tide players who appeared in the 2022 season currently are not on rosters.

The Detroit Lions and the Philadelphia Eagles have six Alabama alumni apiece on their rosters. Six teams do not have a former Crimson Tide player on their rosters.

Alabama has a balanced lineup in the NFL – 41 offensive players, 41 defensive players and one specialist.

The most numerous roster position for the Alabama players in the NFL is defensive tackle with 11 – one more than cornerback and wide receiver.

The Alabama players include 19 defensive backs, 16 offensive linemen, 13 defensive linemen, 10 wide receivers, nine linebackers, seven running backs, four quarterbacks, four tight ends and one punter.

The NFL offseason has reached Phase 3, during which teams are allowed to conduct 10 days of organized team practice activity, often referred to as OTAs. No live contact is permitted, but teams can expand their workouts to include 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.

While these offseason workouts are voluntary, Phase 3 also can include a mandatory minicamp. If players fail to attend those three days of practice, they can be fined.

Twenty NFL teams will hold their first OTA workout on Monday, with 10 more opening OTAs on Tuesday.

The Alabama players who appeared in the NFL last season but aren’t on current rosters include outside linebacker Ryan Anderson, cornerback Anthony Averett, safety Landon Collins, running back Kenyan Drake, linebacker Rashaan Evans, defensive end Da’Shawn Hand, safety Ronnie Harrison, running back Mark Ingram, wide receiver Julio Jones, linebacker Reggie Ragland, safety Deionte Thompson and long snapper Carson Tinker.
