Alabama HS basketball coach resigns after just 2 months

Two months after accepting the job as Faith Academy’s boys basketball coach, Joseph Nieves resigned that position on Friday.

“We had no indication this was going to happen,” Faith athletic director Woodie Head said. “When I got the email this morning at 6 a.m., I was shocked. Coach Nieves went to all the coaching meetings in Montgomery this week and said he had a great time. This caught us completely off guard.”

Nieves was hired in May from Pace, Fla., where he started the basketball program at L.E.A.D Academy. He replaced Chad Applin, who left Faith Academy in the spring to become head coach at Spanish Fort.

In a message posted on social media Friday morning that was later removed, Nieves said he and his wife were expecting another child.

“The Lord has also showed us that He has more for us to do in the Pensacola area, and that we wouldn’t be moving closer to Mobile,” he wrote. “I resigned my position at Faith Academy today. I know what the future holds, but I know Who holds my future.”

Head said assistant coach Tyler Willie will be the interim coach until a new coach is hired.

“That is where we are,” he said. “I’ve already put a few phone calls out. It’s not real good timing because school starts in two weeks, and that is also a teaching slot we need to fill. Not much we can do at this point but start looking. The Lord will work it out.”
