Alabama hosts UAB transfer safety Jaylen Key on visit
Alabama hosted UAB’s Jaylen Key on a visit Wednesday after the Blazers safety announced Tuesday he had entered the NCAA transfer portal.
Key posted videos from Alabama’s practice facility Wednesday afternoon to his Instagram story, and confirmed to 247 Sports on Wednesday evening that he was on a visit. He also told 247 Sports he is planning to visit Ole Miss and Mississippi State, after being contacted by other schools including West Virginia, Colorado and North Carolina.
Asked by 247 Sports what he wants in a new team, Key said, “Somewhere I fit in perfect and my ability is used to its max potential. Also, somewhere that ultimately prepares me for the next level.”
Alabama lost both of its starting safeties, Jordan Battle and DeMarcco Hellams, to the NFL draft this offseason. Freshman Caleb Downs, one of the highest-rated recruits in the country, impressed Nick Saban and his coaching staff this spring and could start at one spot. Seniors Malachi Moore and Kristian Story are the top options to start at the other spot.
Beyond those players, Alabama has two returning scholarship safeties in junior DeVonta Smith, who was out for the spring game because of injury, and sophomore Jake Pope. In addition to Downs, a five-star prospect, Alabama added freshman Brayson Hubbard to its safety room this offseason.
Alabama also lost safety Brian Branch to the NFL draft, where he is among 17 players the league invited to its first round Thursday night in Kansas City. Branch played a significant role in the secondary over three seasons, with Moore and sophomore Earl Little the top options this spring to replace him at “star,” or slot cornerback.
After adding five players through the transfer portal last year, Alabama has added only two so far this offseason in former Maryland tight end CJ Dippre and former Georgia linebacker Trezmen Marshall. But Nick Saban has noted at several points this spring the “opportunity to bring guys in” through the portal, which is open for undergraduates April 15-30 after initially closing in mid-January.
