Alabama high school reverses decision to end varsity athletics
An Alabama high school that announced it will cut varsity athletics has rolled back on its decision.
ABC 33/40 first reported on Monday that Tuscaloosa County School System superintendent Dr. Keri Johnson told attendees of a meeting athletics will remain at Holt High School.
The move comes five days after Holt High School announced that it would be cutting varsity athletics after the 2025-26 season, attributing attributed “steadily declining participation rates and the financial unsustainability.”
“We want to give our student athletes the best opportunity for success,” the release said. “This decision is motivated by what is in the best interest of our current and future students. Club sports and extracurricular activities will remain at Holt High School.”
It was also mentioned in the press release last week that a meeting would be held to discuss the decision, in which Johnson eventually announced the move to step back from the choice.
Among the sports offered at Holt High School are baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, flag football, football, soccer, softball, track and field and volleyball, according to the school’s athletics page.
Holt won a Class 5A state volleyball championship in 1989.
The football team finished 4-6 in 2024 after a 1-9 season in 2023. The Ironmen are 19-110 since 2011 and haven’t won a playoff game since 1998.
