Alabama heavily favored on the road against South Carolina

Alabama men’s basketball is an 17.5-point favorite for Wednesday night’s game at South Carolina, according to sports books that posted lines for the game Tuesday evening.

The Tide will play at 8 p.m. CT in Columbia’s Colonial Life Arena, a day after former player Darius Miles appeared in a Tuscaloosa court for a bond hearing after being arrested Jan. 15 for capital murder.

During the hearing, details emerged from prosecutors about how a pair of Alabama’s starting freshmen, Brandon Miller and Jaden Bradley, were present the night of the shooting that killed Jamea Harris. A law enforcement officer testified that Miller brought Miles’ gun in Miller’s car to the scene, and Miles told his friend Michael Davis, who allegedly fired the fatal shot, where to find it.

Neither Miller nor Bradley are facing charges and there has been no known change to either player’s status for Wednesday night’s game at South Carolina. Both players have played in every game since the Jan. 15 shooting.

Oats said Tuesday that Alabama knew about Miller’s involvement in the case and that he had cooperated with the investigation. However, Tuesday’s court hearing was the first time either player’s name had been publicly connected to the case.

Miller leads Alabama and the SEC in averaging 18.7 points per game, is a candidate for national awards and projected as a top-5 pick in this summer’s NBA draft. Bradley ranks fourth on the team in scoring.

Alabama (23-4, 13-1 in SEC) will meet a South Carolina team that sits near the bottom of the SEC at 3-11, and 10-17 overall. The Gamecocks are led by first-year coach Lamont Paris, hired from Chattanooga last year after the school fired Frank Martin.

The Tide has three games remaining before it plays its regular-season finale at Texas A&M on March 4. The Aggies won their sixth consecutive game Tuesday night, beating No. 11-ranked Tennessee to improve to 13-2 in the SEC.
