Alabama grandfather’s shooting death unsolved after 7 months: ‘Not too late to come forward’

It’s been seven months since a 63-year-old Fayette County man was found slain in his home, and authorities are asking for the public for any information that could lead to his killer or killers.

Kenneth “Kenny” Spinato was shot to death Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2022. He left behind his wife, son and four daughters, and seven grandchildren.

A motive in his slaying has not been disclosed, but investigators believe he was killed with a .40-caliber handgun.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office has enlisted the help of the FBI.

“Investigators continue to work diligently to investigate all possible scenarios, and advancements in forensic analysis have opened previously unexplored investigative avenues,’’ according to a sheriff’s office news release issued on Wednesday.

“Regardless of forensic and other developments, community members remain a vital resource as we seek answers and are confident you can further the effort,’’ the release reads.

Investigators said they already received cooperation in the probe.

“However, we know there are people who have information regarding the circumstances of Kenny’s death who have not yet spoken with law enforcement,” sheriff’s officials said. “Sometimes people have information but do not come forward because they feel it may be unimportant.”

Also, authorities said, potential witnesses may be hesitant to come forward because of a close relationship with others who could have been involved.

“They may have concern for their own safety or reputation, or they may have been unknowingly brought into a situation by the person or persons responsible,’’ the statement reads. “Relationships and loyalties can change, as do people and their perspectives.”

“No matter the circumstances, it is not too late to come forward and help give Kenny’s family and friends the answer they deserve,’’ authorities said.

Investigators are asking people to think back to August and September of last year:

– Did you see anything in the area that was unusual or notice anyone you did not recognize in town during this time frame?

– Did you notice anyone who had unexplained injuries or a person’s sudden departure from the area?

– Did you interact with anyone who seemed intensely interested in this case or maybe someone who took significant efforts to avoid talking about it?

– Did you observe anyone who seemed to have an abrupt change in mood, lifestyle or appearance around this time?

– Investigators determined that Spinato was killed with a .40-caliber handgun. Do you know of anyone who bought, sold or tried to give away a .40-caliber handgun around this time?

Investigators have established a designated phone line and email address for anyone to share information, which can be done anonymously – 205-303-7903 or [email protected].
