Alabama GOP says Trump’s appearance in Montgomery still on

Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl said Tuesday night that Donald Trump’s indictment on charges of trying to overturn the result of the 2020 election has not changed plans for the former president to speak at the state GOP summer dinner in Montgomery on Friday night.

“There has been no change at this point,” Wahl said in a text message. “Everything is moving forward on Friday night’s dinner.”

The state Republican Party had announced Trump’s visit in June.

Trump’s appearance in Alabama will come barely 24 hours after his scheduled arraignment in court in Washington, set for 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Trump is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination for president next year. His legal troubles are mounting. The four-count indictment issued Tuesday is the third case against him.

In June, Trump was indicted on felony charges that he intentionally hoarded hundreds of classified documents at his Florida estate and obstructed the government’s efforts to recover them.

In March, prosecutors in New York charged Trump with falsifying business records as part of an alleged effort to cover up hush payments to a porn actor over an alleged affair.

The former president has denounced all the cases as efforts to derail his 2024 campaign for the White House.

Republicans in Alabama’s congressional delegation also accused the Justice Department of targeting Trump for political reasons.
