Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl says he is “seriously considering” a run for lieutenant governor.
Wahl told the State Republican Executive Committee in an email Wednesday afternoon that he might enter the race.
“I wanted to reach out personally to let you know that I am seriously considering a run for Lieutenant Governor,” Wahl wrote.
“This is not a decision I take lightly, and I am praying for wisdom and guidance.
“I believe that now more than ever, we need bold, conservative elected officials who are willing to stand for our platform and push back against lukewarm policies and the radical left-wing media.”
The state Republican Executive Committee elected Wahl as chairman in 2021, to replace Terry Lathan, who did not seek another term.
Wahl, a butterfly farmer from north Alabama, had been senior vice chairman, the number two position, since 2019.
Wahl was reelected chairman in 2023 and again this year.
“This is a difficult and bittersweet decision for me,” Wahl wrote in Wednesday’s email.
“I am excited about the prospect of furthering the Party’s values by running for Lieutenant Governor, but it does mean that I would plan to step down as Party Chairman.
“While I hope to stay involved with the State Party in some capacity, the bylaws are not entirely clear on whether a chairman taking a leave of absence would satisfy the requirements outlined in our standing rules.
“I’ve received a great deal of encouragement to run, but before making any final decision, I want to include you in this process.
“I deeply value the friendship, support, and wisdom of each SEC member. Your thoughts and prayers mean a great deal to me, and I would be truly grateful for your input and support as I consider this next step.”
Wahl was elected chairman of the Alabama Public Library Service Board last year and has been involved in disputes over the placement of what some say are inappropriate books for children and teens.
Four Republicans have announced they are running for lieutenant governor, which is an open seat next year.
They are Secretary of State Wes Allen, Alabama Agriculture and Industries Commissioner Rick Pate, Opelika pastor Dean Odle, and commercial real estate developer Nicole Wadsworth.
The primary is May 19, 2026.
