Alabama golfer wins U.S. Amateur Championship, joins Tiger Woods in record book
Nick Dunlap added another accolade to his 2023 offseason on Sunday.
The Huntsville, Ala. product and Alabama sophomore won the U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado. Dunlap joins Tiger Woods as the only male golfers to win that tournament and the U.S. Junior Championship.
Dunlap defeated Neal Shipley, a graduate student from Ohio State, in the championship round. The last Crimson Tide athlete to win the tournament was Jerry Pate in 1974. Pate won the U.S. Open two years later.
Dunlap was the top-rated prospect in his class, per Golfweek. He led UA in average strokes per round in his freshman season (70.35), setting the second-lowest per-round single-season average in program history. Dunlap’s 10 top-20 finishes helped earn him the No. 16 ranking in the nation.
Earlier this summer, Dunlap won the Northeast Amateur title and North & South Amateur championship. Dunlap will compete for the U.S. in September’s 2023 Walker Cup against Great Britain.
Win today’s win, Dunlap qualified for the 2024 Masters, U.S. Open the Open Championship.
