Alabama football will play Georgia in SEC championship game
Earlier in the day on Saturday, Alabama football clinched its spot in the SEC championship game with a 49-21 win over Kentucky to win the conference’s west division. During the afternoon slate of games, the Crimson Tide learned its opponent.
After Missouri beat Tennessee at Faurot Field in Columbia, it created a rematch of the 2021 SEC title game. Alabama will play Georgia.
“Obviously it’s great that we won the west,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said after the Tide’s win. “Have an opportunity to play in the SEC championship game, which I’m very happy for this team that they were able to accomplish that.”
The Bulldogs are currently undefeated. They face Ole Miss Saturday, in a game that could have won them the SEC East, even if Missouri had lost to the Volunteers.
The game between Georgia and the Rebels, scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. on ESPN. The Rebels would have had a chance in the SEC West had Alabama lost to Kentucky.
Coached by former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, the Bulldogs have won the past two national titles. The last time UGA lost was in that SEC championship game against Alabama following the 2021 regular season.
Georgia avenged that loss later in the postseason, by beating the Crimson Tide in the national championship game.
Currently, the Bulldogs sit No. 2 in the College Football Playoff rankings. If Alabama is to make the playoffs, it will likely need to win its final two regular season games against Chattanooga and Auburn, and beat the Bulldogs in Atlanta.
The SEC championship game is scheduled for Dec. 3 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
