Alabama football veterans reflect on careers and futures ahead of senior day

Alabama football is set for its home finale as it hosts the Chattanooga Mocs on Saturday at 11 a.m. For some Tide seniors, it could be their last time playing in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

No. 8 Alabama (9-1, 7-0 SEC) has announced it’ll honor 23 seniors in pregame ceremonies. Of those, 13 are scholarship players, notably wide receiver Jermaine Burton and defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe. Not included in this year’s list are defensive backs Trey Amos and Kristian Story, who have an extra year of eligibility remaining.

Yet, even if a player is honored on Saturday, that doesn’t mean their necessarily gone to either graduation or the NFL Draft. For example, Will Reichard was honored a year ago before becoming back to set scoring records.

Before attention turns to the Iron Bowl and SEC title showdown against Georgia, here’s what Alabama’s seniors said this week when asked about their future.

Outside linebacker Chris Braswell: “I’m not focused on the NFL right now but I’ve had a great career here. I just strive on just working hard and keeping my head down and letting all the pieces fall where they fall.”

Braswell has moved into a full-time starting role opposite Dallas Turner and has blossomed into one of the best pass-rushers in the conference. He’s likely made himself some money this fall with seven tacks, two forced fumbles and an interception returned for a touchdown.

Defensive back Malachi Moore: “I haven’t thought about it too much. Time here has gone by so fast and kind of just taking it in. I’ll probably have a little extra motivation on Saturday. Looking forward to it.”

The Hewitt-Trussville native has been a rotational player all four years, bouncing between star cornerback and safety in 2023. He has 131 total tackles and five interceptions over his career. Moore was been labeled by Nick Saban as a potential CEO in his post-playing career.

Running back Roydell Williams: “That’s a conversation between me and coach Saban. … Just being around and being local was big for me. I can go home whenever I want sometimes. It’s just amazing, that I’ve been here four years and the journey I’ve been through, it’s been a lot, and I’ve enjoyed every second of it.”

From Hueyton, Williams has gotten more carries in each of his four seasons, posting a career-high 415 yards so far in 2023. He has posted 10 career touchdowns and recorded his first kick returns last weekend against Kentucky.

Center Seth McLaughlin: “The beginning of my career was trial by fire. My first meaningful snaps came in the second half of the Iron Bowl, the four-overtime win, and that was a crazy experience for a redshirt freshman. … I don’t know what the future holds for me. Whatever we have left this season, I’m going to give my all.”

McLaughlin has been in the middle of the Tide’s improving offensive line and corrected early-season snapping issues.

Kicker Will Reichard: “I’ve kind of thought about it a little bit. It’s a little sad that it’s gonna be my last time at Bryant-Denny. But super thankful to have been able to play here for the last five years, it’s been a huge blessing. Really thankful for Coach Saban giving me the opportunity to do so and I’m really excited to run on that field one last time.”

Reichard is 22 points away from overtaking Louisiana Tech running back Kenneth Dixon in the NCAA all-time scoring leaderboard.
