Alabama football: Texas native Jalen Milroe talks love for Vince Young
Jalen Milroe cracked up at the question following Alabama football’s win over Middle Tennessee State.
Are any of his relatives Texas fans?
“Yeah,” Milroe said, following the one-word answer with a laugh.
Same situation with his extended family. No word yet as to whether he was restricting anyone attending Saturday’s game against the Longhorns to only wearing Alabama apparel.
Milroe, who shared the SEC’s offensive player of the week award for his efforts against MTSU, was also asked if he had owned a Vince Young jersey growing up. That was a yes as well.

On Monday, Alabama’s starting quarterback, a Katy, Tx. native, dove more into his love for the Longhorn legend.
“Vince Young is someone I did watch, as far as highlights,” Milroe said. “My family loved Vince Young. Growing up, I was always a Vince Young fan. He was my first jersey that I bought. I love Vince Young.”
Milroe had a chance to follow in Young’s footsteps as a Houston-area quarterback for Texas. He initially committed to the Longhorns as a four-star prospect out of Tompkins High School.
Then he flipped to the Crimson Tide. Ironically, his lead recruiters from Alabama were Steve Sarkisian and Jeff Banks, who are now the head coach and special teams coordinator respectively at Texas.
“During the recruitment, Alabama was one of the schools that I wanted to go to,” Milroe said of Sarkisian and Banks. “They were coaches that were here throughout my recruiting process. They’re great guys, great coaches. They recruited me here, but I love the team that we have and the coaches that we have here now.”
He might have grown up a Texas fan, watching the replays of what Young did to USC in national championship game following the 2005 season. But he’s all in for Alabama now.
On the way out of the media room Monday, Milroe bid reporters adieu with a hearty “Roll Tide.”
After his game against MTSU, where he threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more, he said he wanted to keep improving. Milroe, who won the starting job for the matchup with the Blue Raiders over Tyler Buchner and Ty Simpson, tied that desire back to his love for Alabama.
“I play for my brothers, who are with me wearing the crimson and white,” Milroe said “I play for the coaching staff. I play for the Alabama fans. That’s who I really play for. I just want to get better. I want to get better for everybody, and that’s the key.”
Alabama will face Texas at 6 p.m. Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game will be aired on ESPN.
