Alabama football: Saban talks QBs, penalties and sacks after USF game

Alabama football pulled of an ugly win on Saturday in Tampa. The Crimson Tide beat South Florida 17-3 at Raymond James Stadium, a victory that was unlikely to impress UA fans.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban spoke with media members in Tampa following the game. Saban played two quarterbacks in Saturday’s contest, starting Tyler Buchner before Ty Simpson took over late in the first half.

Here are the highlights from Saban’s postgame press conference. Alabama will face Ole Miss at home next week in the first game of SEC play.

— Saban says it was a tough game. Says defense did outstanding job, praises pressure. Acknowledges Tide struggled on offense, but says he’s proud of how Alabama players competed.

— Saban notes Tide have had four touchdowns taken off board because of penalties. Says all those things add up to lack of consistency. Says they will evaluate QBs including Milroe before Ole Miss game.

— Saban says he challenged offensive line before final drive to not give USF the ball back. Says Jaheim Oatis had ankle injury, Kendrick Law was sick and Tyler Booker did not play. Notes Booker’s importance to the offense, says he was having back spasms.

— As far as QBs go, Saban said he played those who practiced the best.

— Says offensive line needs to be better.

— Saban says he is most proud of how the team competed. Says they didn’t play great but kept answering the bell. Says Tide didn’t execute great, but his happy with how team competed.

— Saban says defense came up huge on fourth downs. Says the four stops were like four turnovers.

— Says Jalen Milroe did a good job being supportive of teammates despite not playing.
