Alabama football: Saban talks challenge of facing Texas A&M QB Max Johnson

Alabama football will face a Texas A&M team on its second quarterback of the season this Saturday. The Aggies were led by Connor Weigman early in the year, but he will likely miss the rest of the 2023 campaign due to a foot injury against Auburn in Week 4.

In his place is Max Johnson. Johnson is a familiar foe for Alabama, having faced off with the Crimson Tide in 2021 as LSU’s quarterback. He threw for 160 yards and two touchdowns, along with one interception in that game, completing 16 of his 32 pass attempts in a 20-16 loss to UA.

On Wednesday, Alabama head coach Nick Saban was asked if the Tide gained any advantage from having seen Johnson before.

“Not really, he’s a good player,” Saban said. “He’s got a lot of experience. He’s smart, he makes good decisions, he’s been in the system with Jimbo for a long time so he’s a veteran player. The quarterback who got hurt was a very good player, but you know (Johnson) is a very, very good player. He’s played well against us in the past.”

Johnson led the Aggies to victory against Arkansas on Saturday. He completed 17 of his 28 attempts in that game, throwing for 210 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

He’ll be working with a solid receiving core against the Crimson Tide, featuring the like of Anias Smith and Evan Stewart.

“I don’t really see a difference in their ability to be productive and use the weapons that they have to run the ball effectively as well as do a good job of passing it,” Saban said.

Alabama and Texas A&M are scheduled to face of at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in College Station. The game will be aired on CBS.
