Alabama football: Rewind Nick Saban’s Monday press conference before USF

Alabama football is coming off a home loss to Texas that caused the Crimson Tide to slip down in both the media and coaches top 25 polls this week. UA will look to rebound this week in its first road game of the season at South Florida.

To start the week of preparation for the Bulls, Alabama head coach Nick Saban spoke with media members Monday. The Crimson Tide and USF are scheduled to kick off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

Here are the highlights from Saban’s press conference.

— Saban says Alabama did not execute consistently enough in the Texas game. Says Tide had too many turnovers, mental errors and sacks. Says UA will focus on turning it around. Puts that on both coaches and players. Says all issues are fixable and he believes in his players.

— Saban says South Florida has done a good job moving the ball and scoring points. Says key will be how Alabama executes. Praises South Florida’s quarterback and defense. Says Alabama has to play to its standard to be more successful.

— Notes that Alabama gave up sacks on three and four-man rushes against Texas. Says receivers need to get open and the quarterback has to get the ball out of his hand. Says offensive line issues against Texas were not scheme related.

— Says Alabama’s offense is too inconsistent to have an identity at this point. Says Crimson Tide would like to be physical enough to run ball consistently, mixing in play-action and downfield passing.

— Saban says Alabama did a good job pressuring quarterback against MTSU but did not have the success it wanted against Texas. Says Tide didn’t do a good enough job covering long enough for rushers to affect the quarterbacks.

— Says goal of playing two-for-one contract with USF was to get quality opponents outside the SEC. Says its not easy to find teams to play Alabama, so negotiations required give-and-take.

— Saban says Alabama had good energy going into Texas game, but ability to sustain that energy was not there. Notes that the Crimson Tide did not play well enough in the fourth quarter.

— Saban says he would be shocked if Alabama doesn’t respond in positive way to the loss. Reemphasizes that the Crimson Tide have to get better at executing. Says the improvement needs to come now.

— Says backup quarterback Tyler Buchner has continued to improve. Says he has impressed Alabama coaches and players.

— Saban says he did not consider making changes to players on offensive line. Said he feels good about the group, notes that the Tide want competition.

— Notes that the Crimson Tide only had one drop in the last game. Says Crimson Tide did not do a good enough job getting them the ball, but other times receivers didn’t do a good enough job getting open.
