Alabama football ranked over SMU in coaches poll top 25 after CFP snub

Alabama football missed the College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide was the final team out of the 12-team field, with SMU taking the last spot after narrowly losing to Clemson in the ACC championship game.

However, not everyone saw it that way. In the latest coaches top 25 poll update, released after the CFP field was announced, the Tide was ranked No. 11. The Mustangs checked in at No. 12.

Earlier in the day, Alabama had been ahead of SMU in the AP poll. However, neither poll is part of the selection process for the playoff field, and the committee opted for the team with less losses.

“We looked at the number of wins Alabama had against ranked opponents,” CFP selection committee chair Warde Manuel said on ESPN’s selection show broadcast. “We looked at SMU’s schedule. They were undefeated in-conference. Their losses were to ranked teams. But we also looked at Alabama’s losses to unranked teams. It was quite a debate.”

Oregon held onto its No. 1 spot in the coaches poll after beating Penn State in the Big Ten championship game. Georgia jumped to No. 2 after taking down Texas for the SEC title.

Notre Dame checked in at No. 3, with Texas dropping to No. 4. Penn State rounded out the top five.

Tennessee was sixth, while Ohio State was seventh. The Volunteers will travel to Columbus to face the Buckeyes in the first round of the CFP.

Boise ran eighth in the coaches poll, with Indiana ninth. Arizona State, which won the Big 12 championship, was 10th.

Clemson, which made the playoff as the ACC’s champion and will travel to Texas in the first round, finished 13th in the coaches poll.
