Alabama football plummets in coaches poll rankings after loss to Texas
As expected, Alabama football plummeted in the coaches poll rankings following a 34-24 loss to Texas at home on Saturday. The Crimson Tide were ranked No. 3 in the nation on the poll heading into the game.
When the update was released, Alabama fell to No. 10 in the rankings. Steve Sarkisian and Texas rose, jumping to sixth after entering the game No. 11.
The Associated Press media poll will be released at 1 p.m.
Alabama had high hopes entering the Texas game, after defeating the Longhorns in Austin last season. Those went unrealized, as UT quarterback Quinn Ewers found his stride and the Crimson Tide struggled with penalties, interceptions and other errors in the defeat.
“Everybody’s got basically two choices,” head coach Nick Saban said of the Tide’s prospects after the loss. “You can throw in the towel and quit and be mediocre, or you can fight and grind and do the hard things that you need to do to be successful.”
Saban’s team will have the opportunity to climb back higher in the rankings over the next several weeks. The Crimson Tide will be on the road for the first time this season on Saturday, facing South Florida in Tampa.
After that, it’s on to SEC play. UA opens that slate at Bryant-Denny Stadium with Ole Miss before traveling to Starkville to play Mississippi State and College Station to play Texas A&M.
Alabama then has three consecutive home games, starting with Arkansas. After that, the Tide will get a chance to avenge its two losses from last season, with Tennessee then LSU coming to Tuscaloosa.
The SEC slate ends with a road game against Kentucky and the Iron Bowl at Auburn, with a home game against Chattanooga sandwiched between them.
Alabama’s matchup with South Florida is scheduled to kick off at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be aired on ABC.
