Alabama football: Nick Saban talks quarterbacks, leadership and more

Alabama football head coach Nick Saban’s team is currently in its second week of preseason camp. The Crimson Tide is scheduled to have its second camp scrimmage on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

After Alabama’s Tuesday practice, Nick Saban fielded questions from media members about his team, as Sept. 2′s season-opener against Middle Tennessee State draws ever closer.

Here are the takeaways from Saban’s Tuesday press conference.

— Saban opens, says he’s asking which percentage of his team is playing winning football. Says tendency is to endure practice rather than doing the things they need to do to win. Wants players out of their comfort zone. See it as investment instead of sacrifice.

— Saban says he likes team’s attitude so far. Says they need “critical mass” of players to continue to improve so Tide can play winning football.

— Says Terrion Arnold is more confident, has more understanding of what’s required this year. Notes competition at cornerback.

— Saban says he tells quarterbacks to force him to play them.

— Says Amari Niblack is “mismatch player to some degree” as a pass receiver at tight end. Says Niblack is doing great during camp.

— Saban notes Kool-Aid McKinstry is back in the punt game. Says Tide are trying to work more players in that role.

— Saban asks how many players need to be led. Notes that some players don’t need leader to impact them every day to do the right things. Says having those types on team can be more important than the leaders themselves.

— Saban says players need to focus, get reps and learn from mistakes to help build depth on the offensive and defensive line.

— Says Tide needs to continue to improve at inside linebacker. Says it’s a work in progress for some of the players, but pleased with others.
